💡 Behind the Project

The story of the Digital Safety Project — why it exists, where it's headed, and how it meets parents exactly where they are.

Why I Built This

A personal letter from the founder.

Dear fellow parents and guardians,

After more than 30 years in technology, you might think keeping up with the digital world would come naturally to me. The truth is, even with that background, the pace of change — and the growing dangers it poses to our youth — can feel overwhelming. So when I went looking for resources to help parents navigate this landscape, what I found was information hidden behind subscription fees, or so loaded with technical jargon that it felt like I needed a cybersecurity degree just to understand the basics.

I saw a gap: parents needed a resource that was practical, honest, and rooted in the values we are trying to pass on to the next generation, not something that requires a cybersecurity degree to understand. I wanted to build a place where any parent — regardless of how tech-savvy they feel — could walk away knowing exactly what to watch for and what to do about it.

That conviction became the Digital Safety Project: a free, faith-based resource committed to keeping content clear, actionable, and non-technical. Every guide, every checklist, every recommendation on this site exists for one reason — to help you protect the children God has entrusted to your care.

This project is a labor of love, and it grows every time another parent shares it with their church, school, or community group. I'm grateful you're here, and I pray this resource is a blessing to your family.

Walking this road with you,
Tim Owen
Founder, Digital Safety Project

Your Journey Starts Here

Parents face common challenges in the digital age. Here's how the Digital Safety Project meets you at each stage.

💬

"My kid wants social media."

Our Age-Based Recommendations and Maturity Progression help you decide when — and under what conditions — each platform makes sense.

😕

"I don't know what apps are safe."

The Online Dangers guide breaks down every major platform category — social media, gaming, AI chat, and more — so you can evaluate any app your child asks about. The Platform Safety Scoring Matrix then rates sixty of those platforms side by side.

😰

"I feel behind on technology."

Everything on this site is written in plain language — no tech background required. Start with the Protection page for step-by-step tools you can set up today, or watch the Featured Videos for a quick crash course.
